‘Separate & Silent’

Divisions Gallery | 2022

Pentridge Studio resident artists were invited to respond to the historical site in which they work. Named after the policy that contributed to Pentridge’s notoriety, ‘Separate & Silent’ brings together different perspectives on the site’s past and future, alongside artefacts from its history.

The three pieces I contributed to this show focused on the layers of paint used over the years to coat the prison walls. They’d often use colours that were left over or cheapest at the hardware shop, which meant you’d sometimes get unusual choices like pastel pinks and blues. I find the colours a really fascinating juxtaposition against what these walls would have witnessed. Plus I feel the various layers of paint are an interesting and beautiful way to describe the passing of time. These works were quite different for me to produce, but were a very rewarding and reflective experience.
