OIL PAINTERS MATERIALS LIST
Brushes:
I recommend Hog Hair brushes in varying sizes - eg 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 - I generally prefer flat and filbert, but your choice depending on the style of work you’d like to produce. You can find great, economical brushes from Rosemary and Co. - the Bravura range is a good choice. Please make sure you choose long handle brushes.
Supports:
Multiple loose linen/canvas sheets, A4 or A3 and a board you can tape the sheets to. Please don’t bring canvas paper though! Your surface needs to be something you can rub back to (canvas paper is too absorbent).
Paints:
If you’re just starting out, I always recommend investing in fewer colours of the best brand you can afford. My preference is Langridge, Michael Harding, Gamblin or Winsor & Newton.
Before investing in lots of colours, I recommend starting with;
• Ultramarine Blue
• Cadmium Yellow Pale or Lemon Yellow
• Alizarin Crimson or Quinacridone red
• Burnt Sienna
• Titanium White
• Ivory Bla
Nice to have’s but not totally necessary to start with;
• Winsor Blue (Winsor & Newton Range) or Phthalo Blue (green shade)
• Yellow Ochre
• Viridian
• Cadmium red
• Winsor violet or Dioxazine purple
Mediums / solvents:
• Linseed Oil
• Gamsol (Gamblin range) OR Odourless solvent / Solvent 75 (Langridge or Art Spectrum)
Extra stuff you’ll need:
• A board you can tape loose canvas to
• Masking tape
• Double dipper for mediums
• Palette knife
• LARGE wooden palette (natural colour, not white) – closer to A3 size than A4 if possible.
• Roll of paper towel, baby wipes and soft clean rags
